  4.     The late pianist Vladimir Horowitz first appeared in Tokyo in
  5. 1983 (MILESTONES, Nov. 20). His poor performance made many people
  6. wish he had come when he was younger. One critic called him "a
  7. cracked antique." The story could have ended there. But on his
  8. second visit to Japan, in 1986, another, far better Horowitz
  9. appeared. If there are miracles, that was one. But as he once said,
  10. "What's important is contrast."
